NO! DO NOT USE Fly repellent ointment on beef or dairy cows — or any animal you are planning to eat. Most store-bought Anti-Fly Creams, Ointments, and Gels should not be used on cows that you plan to eat the meat or dairy products of.
Most of the anti-fly creams, ointments, and gels that are meant for horses are NOT MEANT FOR COWS, or any other animal that you plan to eat (meat, dairy products, or otherwise).
This is not explained very well. Most labels simply say “For Use on Dogs and Horses Only.” This is true, because you normally don’t slaughter dogs or horses for food. Many products also warn that this product should not be used on “horses intended for slaughter…” but does not explain why.
It is not safe to eat cows that have been treated with many popular fly repellent products. It is also not safe to consume dairy products derived from the milk of cows that have been treated with many popular anti-fly gels products.
Most fly repellent products made for horses Contain 3 main chemicals:
These chemicals can get into the meat tissues, organs, and mammary glands of a cow and can build-up. The chemicals can therefore be transferred to a human that eats the meat or dairy that is already introduced to the animal. These chemicals can make you sick if ingested, or if you eat meat or milk from an animal that has been treated with the chemicals.
